FORMENLEHRE AND THE CHAMBER MUSIC OF 20th-CENTURY CENTRAL EUROPE

Guest lecturer Gianmario Borio demonstrates via archival sources the influence of Formenlehre on central European composers of the 20th century. The composers were fully aware of the theories of musical form, and one can follow on their scores how they tried to adapt certain "untouchable" principles to their new melodic-harmonic conceptions. Works to be discussed include Berg's Lyric Suite, Bartok's Fourth Quartet and Hindemith's Second Quartet.
